Importance Of Both Financial And Non Financial Motivation Commerce Essay It is widely believed that an effective management system of motivation in a company will directly influence employees to achieve their goals and businesses objectives (Accel-team, 2010). According to Accel-team (2010), motivation can be explained in financial and non-financial aspects. Financial rewards can be defined as using money as an incentive to employees for improving productivity. In contrast, non-financial rewards motivate employees by job enlargement, team working, and quality control circles etc. The below argument will show that financial and non-financial motivations are both determinants which affect employees through investigation. Taloy year pointed out that the best way to motivate people at work is by money. In other words, those workers who produce more in a fair day can receive more payment (Accel-team, 2010). The main reason for workers to go to work is that they can earn money to consume (Accel-team, 2010). Thus, workers are encouraged to work as efficient as possible they can (Accel-team, 2010). For example, Tesco is one of the top three retails in UK (Thetimes100, 2011). There are over 3700 stores and 440000 employees globally, which is very difficult to organize well (Thetimes100, 2011). However, Tesco makes good use of incentive payment to motivate employees (Thetimes100, 2011). Tesco not only give employees increased income, but also use targeted benefit to support the varied lifestyles of employees (Thetimes100, 2011). Furthermore, Fringe benefits prefer to provide their worker some in kind rather than in crash (Accel-team, 2010). For instance, company cars and private health insurance may lead to good performance of employees in a company (Accel-team, 2010). As another example that the fortune magazine states that Google is a company which is listed on the top 50 companies to best work for (Ezinearticles, 2008). Google provide their staff some usual perks which certain health cares and children facilities by allowing workers to bring their pets to work (Ezinearticles, 2008). The result for these series of Fringe benefits not only reduces the number of sick-leave days, but also can bring a good environment for workers. Nevertheless, financial rewards are not the only method that satisfies employees. There are non-financial rewards, which are as important as financial reward (Changingminds, 2011). Fredrick Herzberg of needs has claimed that both financial and non-financial rewards play significant roles in motivation (Changingminds, 2011). This is show in Figure 1, physiological need is at the bottom of the pyramid, such as wages for worker to be used each week or providing workers a good working environment (Changingminds, 2011). If the physiological needs are satisfied, employees needs will move to the next level which is called safety needs, such as living in a safe area or job security. As the level goes up in the pyramid, the financial factors will not satisfy the workers need while non-financial rewards motivate employees (Changingminds, 2011). Figure 1 (Changingminds, 2011) In order to motivate employees in higher levels in Maslows hierarchy of needs, it is necessary for business to consider more in non-financial rewards such as job enlargement and team work quality control circles. Job enlargement involves giving workers more jobs to avoid repeating doing the same job. In other words, they can change their jobs and tasks, so that they will not feel bored. For example, KFC invested more than 240 million Yuan for 20 million employees over a 17-year period when it entered China market ( Robroad, nd).The reason for KFC to use such a large amount of money to train their employees is that it aims to improve employees ability to deal with different jobs and tasks ( Robroad, nd). Meanwhile, team work is another good way to combine polled talents to work more efficiently. For example, one of the worldwide leaders in luxury automobiles BMW believed that teamwork helps workers trust each other and share their ideas by brainstorming, which hence helps the company run more efficiently (Swampfox, nd). Therefore, BMW spent thousands of money to make workers learnt how to trust and communicate better through a series of practice by using ultimate driving machine (Swampfox, nd). Finally, quality control circles are able to improve the nature of job directly. Staff can meet regularly to study and solve production problems. In addition, they also have abilities to help the company to make decisions. The well known computer company IBM does well in this area, employees in IBM can take part in decision making and bring some useful ideas for the company (Ocities, nd). At the same time employees feel that they are trusted and powerful when they were making an attempt to solve the problem (Ocities, nd). Therefore, non-financial motivation such as job enlargement, team work and quality control circles are also effective ways to motivate employees. In summary, it is necessary for a company to make sure what the employees really need and choose financial rewards or non- financial rewards to encourage them. There is no doubt that fair day pay and fringe benefits are still reasons why people keep working. However, non-financial rewards which include job enlargement, team work and quality control circles are more attracted for some higher educated employees, which are equally as important as financial rewards. The factor proportions model was originally developed by two Swedish economists, Eli Heckscher and his student Bertil Ohlin in the 1920s. Many elaborations of the model were provided by Paul Samuelson after the 1930s and thus sometimes the model is referred to as the Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson (or HOS) model. In the 1950s and 60s some noteworthy extensions to the model were made by Jaroslav Vanek and so occasionally the model is called the Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek model. Here we will simply call all versions of the model either the "Heckscher-Ohlin (or H-O) model" or simply the more generic "factor-proportions model". The H-O model incorporates a number of realistic characteristics of production that are left out of the simple Ricardian model. Recall that in the simple Ricardian model only one factor of production, labor, is needed to produce goods and services. The productivity of labor is assumed to vary across countries which implies a difference in technology between nations. It was the difference in technology that motivated advantageous international trade in the model. The standard H-O model(1) begins by expanding the number of factors of production from one to two. The model assumes that labor and capital are used in the production of two final goods. Here, capital refers to the physical machines and equipment that is used in production. Thus, machine tools, conveyers, trucks, forklifts, computers, office buildings, office supplies, and much more, is considered capital. All productive capital must be owned by someone. In a capitalist economy most of the physical capital is owned by individuals and businesses. In a socialist economy productive capital would be owned by the government. In most economies today, the government owns some of the productive capital but private citizens and businesses own most of the capital. Any person who owns common stock issued by a business has an ownership share in that company and is entitled to dividends or income based on the profitability of the company. As such, that person is a capitalist, i.e., an owner of capital. The H-O model assumes private ownership of capital. Use of capital in production will generate income for the owner. We will refer to that income as capital "rents". Thus, whereas the worker earns "wages" for their efforts in production, the capital owner earns rents. The assumption of two productive factors, capital and labor, allows for the introduction of another realistic feature in production; that of differing factor-proportions both across and within industries.

King’s major course of action Essay

King’s major course of action throughout all of his work was nonviolence, and he was awarded The Nobel Peace Prize for his work. The war itself was a betrayal of America’s moral obligation, heightened by media portrayals of what is just for our nation. King expressed that our spirit continues to diminish as we diminish humanity across the world. His motive was for our populace to stop thinking in terms of our nations as a singular body, but to think of our nation as a model â€Å"that embraces the brotherhood of man† (King, 1967). He required Americans to see the Vietnamese as our brothers and sisters and gave insight on the experience of the Vietnamese as people not enemies. King spoke of our complete funding handed to the French so they may advance in control of these people. â€Å"He proclaimed that America is a victim of Western arrogance for rejecting the revolutionary government seeking self determination in Vietnam† (Spence, 2009). King told us their story of devastation. He described our destruction of their resources. War efforts contributed to the loss of crops, tainted water supplies, and the demoralized the Vietnamese people in their efforts for survival during a time of great suffering (Spence, 2009). King made it clear that the destruction of the Vietnamese culture was intertwined with the destruction of our own culture. He proclaimed that our troops were sent on a false precedence that only furthered agendas of our nations wealthy. Their agenda led our oppressed solders to death as they killed those oppressed in Vietnam. The propaganda in acquiring a watch dog status in the eyes of other nations mocked our pursuit. Our leaders could not articulate our purpose for being in Vietnam. A Great Buddhist leader commented that America was no longer revolutionary and democratic but the image of violence and militarism (Spence, 2009). For over 5,000 years we have built empires and maintained a rich get richer mentality. We have seen those with wealth as models to obtain our own successes. We have left those who have needed aid the most behind to further our own successes. We have only risen to occasion of hope when we reap the highest benefits. The United States is trapped in an Imperial  Consciousness: those not for our agenda are against our agenda. This way of thinking is dangerous and leads to Moral Autism. †Imperial Consciousness may have the social intelligence to recognize it is easiest to steal from those who trust you, but lack the moral capacity to recognize that to do so constitutes a wrong in itself and destroys the fabric of trust essential to healthy social relationships† (Korten, 2006). Beyond Vietnam lays the ground work for this school of thought not in a way that we should adopt it, but the urgency to abandon it. King’s speech captures the momentum needed for our nation to mature. King sought for our nation’s people to be true examples of revolutionaries. He demanded we abolish thoughts that privilege is earned and realize it is inherent. He asked we believe in people most disadvantaged and stop tucking them under our nation’s blanket of shame. The inherent shame is our own complacency in these matters and our brain washed minds that comply with the thinking that we do not matter or have the capacity to understand the complexity of decisions made by our own power structures. It can be said that King’s message was to end the war, and it was. He projected ending the war was essential and gave a list on how.   Ã¢â‚¬Å"End to all bombing in Vietnam; unilateral cease fire; prevention of battle grounds in Southeast Asia; recognition of the National Liberation Front; a set date from removal of all foreign forces from Vietnam in accordance with the 1954 Geneva Convention; granting of asylum to Vietnamese suffering persecution; and the payment of reparations for harm done† (Spence, 2006). He also described what could be done at home, stating we should continue to protest and stay active within our churches. While his message was to end the war, it was a stepping stone in the right direction for our nation’s obligation, honor and integrity. Layer by layer embedded in his speech King ask Americans to make a worthy change. As our nation evolves and advances in wealth, industry, technology, the market and free trade with other nations we remain stagnant  in social and cultural advances. We have lost sight in the power of our people and all people. We have without question remained faithful children of our empirical society only to watch our brothers and sisters fall, and when they fall we march to the guise that it is somehow their fault and their fault alone. We continually fault each in our race to the top. King’s message is not a memo to the individual but a mass informant. We must change our institutions and how they support us. We must stop looking at our nonprofit organizations as less worthy because they are stated as not making a profit in our capitalist society. We must stop losing sight of our causes to obtain grant monies that slightly sway our causes. We must advance people in areas of expertise that are directly connected to the people in which they service. We must put check marks on markets and free trade. We must care about the woman in the third world nation that makes our clothes or computer parts. We must demand that people are our highest commodity and put above a precedent of all things material. We must look at all people as our people. Beyond Vietnam is a speech that should be resurfaced again and again. Martin Luther King’s words take you to the past and reflect the present in a way that sends chills through your soul, and if you’re a person of any feeling and some intellect, it will heighten your very being. Be prepared for a journey before you engage, for such insight can cause anger, regret, and shame. Do not cling to these emotions. MLK has given each and everyone exposed to his message, a gift. He presents us with precision hidden by our meticulously wrapped ideology. One would think as a nation we would share his plea for humanity, instead we rewrap adding layer upon layer. We bury his endowment only to become systematic. Together we are robotic, uniformed servants of the power elite.

Effects of Constantly Moving

â€Å"Move to a new country and you quickly see that visiting a place as a tourist, and actually moving there for good, are two very different things,† said Tahir Shah. Moving can always be tough event for children to cope with. Change can be difficult part of a person’s life, oftentimes quite harrowing. Some may find change to be a good thing but often times not a consistent transition. I, on the other hand, find it to be more of a regular transition. Moving has many consequences on an individual psychologically, economically, and physically. Moving frequently can have its plethora of disadvantages.People move for many reasons: such as a new job, to live in a better place, or to start a new life. Just as in anything else in life, there is a good side and bad side to moving. To have a place to call home is essential in the life of a person. People often take pride in the city that they are from. Human’s work off of routine and a sense of normalcy, which is drasti cally impacted through the constant occurrence of relocating. Moving frequently can affect a person’s lifestyle and way of life, such as changing friendships, affecting careers, and lowering happiness.There are many children in life who have to move to a new town during their childhood. While there may be those few children that get the privilege of not moving, most others have to move at least once in their child hood. Some children even have to move two, three, and sometimes more. When a child has to move from the town that they have grown up in, it has many effects on his or her life. These effects can greatly change a child and it can make a child feel like he doesn’t fit in. It can also make one have a hard time making new friends, especially at a younger age.Although, many times parents do not have much of a choice in the matter, they should really think about these effects on a child before they make the decision to move when their children are still, well, chil dren. The first disadvantage to moving frequently is that it is difficult to find friends or maintain friendships. It is natural for human beings to develop bonds and relationships with other people, such as friendships. Experiences such as family camping trips to the mountains form these bonds. When human beings are surrounded with other people they develop a sense of closeness. Through the lessons of life, people grow together.Children and adults alike find connecting bonds together. When someone moves it’s almost impossible to keep the sense of closeness that was once there. When relocating to a new city or neighborhood, people feel out of place and commonly don’t like their new surroundings. Finding new friends and replacing the bonds shared with a best friend seem almost impossible. A yearly event that many military families have to prepare for, is finding out where their next move will be. In the article, â€Å"Military children and PCS,† they claim  "Moving is a necessary and inevitable part of military life.It is also a very large emotional and physical challenge not only for you but for your entire family. †(Crooks) Growing up having a military father, staying in one state was hardly ever an option. Ever since I could remember, we consistently moved around the continent and to different countries. This effected my inner emotions and feelings. I can only remember a few childhood friends that I had, but my relationships with them would end when I had to move to the next city. Being an only child also adds stress; I was typical by myself a lot, and mildly shy.First coming to North Carolina was hard for our family; I was a freshman in High School. At that point in many high school students life, they had their cliques, already involved in extracurricular activities, and I was still trying to adjust to the different lifestyle. I often time spent my weekends staying home, and going out with my parents. I didn’t go to t he Friday Night Football games because I didn’t want to go by myself and I didn’t want to sit with my parents. Having to transition to different schools was hard. Coming into a new school, in the middle of the year, many of the children already have their own cliques.Teenagers are not always as friendly as we picture them to be but once I started to get involved in Cheerleading, and clubs I soon became friends with many of the girls from my team and the clubs. Life in high school was becoming more fun, interesting, and my grades were outstanding. When having to relocate, finances take in an enormous part. Moving is an expensive and time-consuming experience. You need to be prepared and organized, in order to make your move as cost-effective and stress-free as possible.From my many experiences of having to move, my parents always  tried to down size our amount of items in our house. We didn’t always know if we would move into a house or have to transition into an apartment. To make sure we had enough money, we would have yard sells. The money we would make would go to our expenses for driving from state to state. When we would get the privilege of knowing where we going to move months in advance, my mom would always see what kind of job she would be qualified for. My father, of course would have a job since we were moving due to his job, but for my mother on the other hand would often times be unemployed.Our first year of being in North Carolina, my mother was unemployed, which was very hard for her since she came from a manger position at a Texas bank. She would constantly go on websites to look for jobs that were hiring. She had a few interviews but sometimes she wasn’t qualified since she didn’t have a college degree. When she would have a job offer, she always made sure that they had benefits and wouldn’t settle for less than what she was use to. When she finally had a good offer from a daycare center, she made su re that she would eventually be able to become a full time working and have good hours.She had previous experience with the child care centers from different military bases, so she knew that would help her keep the job, achieve bonuses, and have a good standing with them. Before you transition to new environment, focus on setting a budget, to make your move a successful one. No matter how often families change residence, moving brings with it a variety of emotions and situations. It is often times very easy to get caught up in the moving checklist of boxes, cleaning, packing and moving and overlooks the emotions that are tied to the transition to a new location.When it comes to your children it is very important that you take the time to allow them to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences related to the impending move and once you have arrived at your new location. Depression is common when child or families have to move away. â€Å"Even when the reasons for a move are go od (such as a promotion or better job for a parent) and you're excited about it, it's still a good idea to be prepared for unexpected changes. † Adolescents who frequently have to move experience anxiety: from having to move to an unfamiliar place.You regularly feel disoriented, like you do not have anybody to communicate with. When I was in elementary school, I would have to sit in the back because all of the other children already had their assigned seats. Being in the back wasn’t fun at all; the other children would often gawk back at you. When we were allowed to partner with other students, the other children already knew whom they wanted to be with and I would be alone. This played an enormous influence to me being timid, always having to make new friends, starting over, and having to be accepted by other children.Children may also feel anxious and sometimes even angry about a move. This may have a direct impression on a child’s emotional development. As a r esult, your child may develop insecure attachments with others and later have issues with trust. To help with the transition, Dr. D’Arcy Lyness recommends that parents encourage their children to talk about their feelings. Join and participate in volunteer missions, local organizations or family church activities. A child’s sense of security, endurance and confidence, all necessary ingredients for building solid self-esteem: is often affected by frequent moves.During this period, reassure your adolescent to frankly express all-powerful feelings to you, including sadness, excitement, fear and anger. Encourage friendships with children who will treat your son or daughter kindly. Any transition or change in a child’s life can cause estrangement anxiety. Common symptoms of separation anxiety include sleep disruption, changes in eating patterns, increased clinginess, and accelerated apprehensions about being alone and isolated. Education will always be important to p arents who have to move their adolescents.Moving can impact an adolescent's cognitive improvement. Studies done by the Center for Research on Child Wellbeing show that children in households that move frequently have lower grades and higher school dropout rates, on average . Moves undermine constructing academic skills during the formative elementary-level grades, when students absorb basic writing, reading and math skills. Frequent moves may also have an undesirable impression on communication skills for children of all ages forced to familiarize to new classroom environments and education styles.Educational programs can vary significantly between schools, so moving to a new school every few years can have a profound effect on a military child’s educational progress. For example, a student moving from a school that instills geography in ninth grade to a school that instills it in eighth grade might completely miss the subject if he moves between those years. Emotional and ph ysical struggles might also make it more difficult for him to fit in at school or focus on his education.However, schools in some areas with large military populations receive funding from the Department of Defense to design programs to help military kids with their challenges. On the other hand, a child may find that he is premature of the curriculum at a new school, resulting in dullness during teachings. An appointment to the new school proceeding to the move may also help tranquil your adolescent's angsts. My parents would constantly look up the finest academic schools in our new town, and try to find housing around that exact zone due to zonings. Before I moved to North Carolina, my parents gave me the choice between three high schools.In the end I choose Jack Britt High School, because they had abundant academics, athletics, and we had a four-class schedule instead of seven classes. Physically, a military move alters an adolescent's atmospheres, perhaps forcing him to leave pe ts, friends and family, and disconnecting them from accustomed locations. Children might experience headaches, stomachaches or other indications of the anxiety they are feeling. Some children even acquire depression or alteration disorders because of frequent moves, and these struggles might produce physical symptoms. Teens who move are most likely to exhibit symptoms of depression.Adolescents who move to a new location may also get into fights with other children or may experience harassment since they are the newest children in school or in a particular neighborhood. Military moves can positively affect children as well. It exposes them to many abodes, individuals and releases numerous experiences. It educates them to simplify because of the frequency of moves. It also lures the military family stronger as you realize to rely on each other. Military children acquire empathy, independence, strength of charisma and so many other constructive qualities as well.The most important enti ty to recollect is communication. Moving is an opportunity for your adolescent to live in and discover a new city, perhaps even a new country, and its people. They may be exposed to new cultural traditions and interesting and different ways of life. It also is a chance to meet new natives and make new friends. Explain how the family will benefit from the move. When we moved to North Carolina it was a bit of a culture shock.I was now experiencing the more southern lifestyle. Until I moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina I hadn’t really seen a lot of dirt roads, or streets without streetlights. They do have streets here and there that do have streetlights but in California I’m used to streets having plethora of streetlights, usually ten to twenty on one street alone. A huge difference between California and North Carolin a is that North Carolina doesn’t have as many big highways; there are more of back roads. Moving may seem very detrimental when you initially envision of having to leave, but countless worthy effects can occur when you leave.You have the opportunity to start over and reinvent yourself, and optimistically revolutionize for the better. Many people who work regular day-to-day jobs usually stay in the same city for their whole life and don’t have much of an adjustment. Change when done the right way can be beneficial; it doesn’t always have to be a traumatic occasion. In the end moving isn’t always bad there are many great experiences that come out of it. You can always learn from frequently having to move and make the best of out it. For me I’ve had the privilege of being able to travel to many states and country.I wouldn’t trade the experience for nothing. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many great people who have affected my life for the good and bad, but most importantly have taught me life lessons. If it wasn’t for my father being in the military I wouldn’t be as blessed as I am today. His sacrifices have given me many great opportunities. I’ve been able to travel to places that many young colleges student have yet to experience. For one I can say without traveling around the world I wouldn’t be the same person I am today, and I’m proud of what that those changes have taught me.

The Pieta by Michelangelo

The Pieta by Michelangelo Free Online Research Papers At 22, a relatively unknown artist by the name of Michelangelo created a marble sculpture that continues to be seen by people around the world in the Vatican City of Rome. This piece named The Pieta has been sculpted from a single slab of marble from the Pits of Carrara. In Germany during the 13th-Century, the earliest representation of The Pieta was created into a polychromed wood sculpture. In Italy during the 14th-Century, The Pieta was mostly painted on side panels of altarpieces devoted to the Passion. In 1498, Michelangelo was commissioned to do a life size representation of The Pieta measuring 1.74m x 1.95m. He sculpted four versions, but only finished one. It took him two years to finish this magnificent sculpture. His interpretation of the Pieta was far different than the ones created previously by other artists. Various painters and sculptures have created the Pieta, which depicts the Virgin Mary holding the body of her son Jesus Christ after his death, in many different forms. In Michelangelo’s Pieta, the Virgin Mary is seen as a youthful, serene, and celestial young woman indifferent to the classic style of a broken-hearted, old woman. This is especially important when you consider that the sculpture is of a mother holding her dying son in her arms. To emphasize Mary’s empowerment over her son’s dead body, Michelangelo sculpted her very large and angelic like, with her clothing draping down like a waterfall. Her son, who just suffered through the crucifixion, seems to show no signs of the Passion as his face is serene and absent of any facial wounds. The only signs that the crucifixion actually took place are that of the wounds on his side, hands and feet. Michelangelos work always gives me a very pleasant feeling when I look at it. He shares his opinions through his work without any regret. Michelangelos sculpture of The Pieta depicts a very informal view of Mary holding Jesus Christ after his death. The overall mood of the sculpture is very enlightening and angelic. If I had no idea who these two people are in the sculpture, I would look at this picture and see a loving mother holding her dying son in her arms. The warmth in Marys eyes pulls you down to her son’s body, and then the draping around the bottom pulls you down to the floor. The cloth that is draped over Mary and over the bottom of the sculpture looks almost real. The softness and the detail of it make you believe that you are seeing the real thing. In conclusion, I believe that The Pieta by Michelangelo is one of his most magnificent pieces of sculpture. All elements of the compositionthe position of the left arm of Jesus, the angles formed by his knees, and the folds of Marys draperywork toward a gentle unity of design that contrasts sharply with earlier versions of the subject. I believe that Michelangelos Pieta transformed the late medieval devotional image into a monumental statement on the meaning of Christian Sacrifice. This magnificent sculpture will be seen throughout the future as a very influential and inspirational piece of artwork. I would focus on Hong Thai and Smart Holiday in Hong Kong to deeply know about the marketing strategies, thats mean I would like to compare on marketing strategies of Hong Thai and Smart Holiday as well as what factors will affect /attract tourists, what promotion channels will use for tourists and so on. Government and Politics - We Need Election Reform in America Essay

For a democracy to work, the citizens must remain knowledgeable and elections must remain unbiased. Our current system of electing presidents fails in both of these regards: citizens are only given two choices that stand any chance of winning and their decisions between those two candidates are influenced not by knowledge, but instead by what they have seen on thirty second television commercials. In order to break up the complete political monopoly the Democrat and Republican Parties have on the United States, we as Americans need to reform our presidential elections so that third party and independent candidates have a legitimate chance of holding offices and so that citizens are able to vote on the candidates based on their political beliefs rather than on their ability to fundraise and advertise. Similar reforms should be made to the elections fo r other offices as well at the federal, state and local levels. The ideas and arguments presented in this paper can be applied to American elections in general although, because of the small scope of this paper, they only speak of the presidential elections. Japanese industries had swallowed up a number of our companies and were threatening others. It turned out that quality was dramatically changing the way many organizations were conducting business. There was a new buzzword being used by managers: "Total Quality Management", or "TQM" (Blackiston, 1996, p. 1). What emerged as some of the key motivators...the drivers? The Juran Institute believes at first sheer terror motivated many American businesses. These companies realized that quality was a matter of life and death. Indeed, many American manufacturers of consumer electronics died before they could react (Blackiston, 1996, p. 1). The Juran Institute states: †¦another important motivator for quality initiatives was the concept of "the costs of poor quality". This relates to all of those costs that would disappear in an organization, if everything were done correctly right from the start. We saw early on that most companies were simply throwing away about 25% of their sales revenues on scrap, repairs, warranties and other costs of quality (Blackiston, 1996, p. 1). As the years went by, the reasons for implementing TQM piled up; however, the Juran Institute figured that 80% of the companies that tackled TQM in the 1980s failed (Blackiston, 1996, p.1). Although quality improved, TQM seemed to be mired in â€Å"find and fix† the problem and not worry about the cost.

Jacksonian democrats Essay

Thomas Jefferson was consistently inconsistent by switching from a strict constructionist view to a broad interpretation on the constitution to support his political views. Similarly, Jacksonian democrats occasionally altered their belief of being guardians of the political democracy, individual liberty, economic opportunity, and the Constitution to suit their purposes. President Andrew Jackson had several ways of ensuring political democracy thus he is regarded as a guardian of it. The spoils system is an example of Jackson stressing political democracy. According to Senator William Marcy the spoils system was acceptable since the benefits of winning should go to the winner. He supports this thought by saying, â€Å"To the victor belongs the spoils.† The spoils system allowed Jackson â€Å"Old Hickory† to rid his opponents of government jobs and award them to his supporters the â€Å"Hickoryites.† Another example of political democracy is rotation in office. Rotation in office is what Jackson utilized to incorporate the â€Å"common man† into a government role. Jackson believed that any man was capable of doing the job. â€Å"Every man is as good as his neighbor,† he declared, â€Å"perhaps equally better.† The inevitable dilemma that arises from Jackson’s notion on political democracy is that illite rates, incompetents and crooks obtained positions of public trust. The result of this was Samuel Swartwout, the collector of customs at the port of New York, stole a million dollars from the government. Jackson, although he was a rich aristocrat at the time of his election, might have been influenced to raise the common man on a pedestal as a result of him having been born poor. One of his first acts as president was to invite the working class of America to his inaugural. The White house was only emptied upon a rumor that said spiked punch had been served on the lawns. As a result, the inaugural is often referred to as the â€Å"inaugural brawl† and Jackson being the leader of the common people was called, â€Å"King Mob.† This represented what Jackson emphasized and that was the importance of individual right. Jackson believed that it was unfair for power to be in the hands of an elite few. Therefore, he advocated the rights of the common man through his land policy. His land policy would allow people to expand  further into the west. The more obtainable land there was signified a higher electorate. Jackson’s belief of rotation in office allowed average men to try their hand at government. Rotation in office is something which had been previously limited to the aristocratic elite since they were the only ones viewed as capable of managing the job. His success in achieving basic individual rights is shown in Doc. D. when Harriet Marineau, a British visitor to the United States reported that she had seen every man as an independent citizen and controversies â€Å"of which the people were to be judges.† However, the concept of individual liberty is not applied to minorities such as the blacks and Indians. This is seen in Document E. when Philip Hone, a New York City businessman describes riots in Eastern cities. â€Å"The spirit of riot and subordination to the laws†¦appears to have been produced by†¦ hostility to the blacks and an indiscriminate persecution of all whose skins were darker than those of their enlightened fellow citizens.† Document G also demonstrates that individual liberty was only directed towards whites. If individual liberty had been meant for all the Indians would not have been removed from their homeland. Further proof of whites against minorities is represented in Document A when George Henry Evans explains that all men are created equal, and allowed the rights of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Obviously, the Indians, immigrants and blacks were not granted these rights to individual freedom. Jackson was a guardian of the economy since he supported economic opportunities. To make sure that economic opportunities were achieved Jackson had to be anti big business. A big business tended to monopolize a certain part of the economy and not allow other businesses to expand and earn money. He wanted to ensure that the economy was not in the hands of a few rich men. In 1835 Jacksonian Roger Brooke Taney replaced Federalist John Marshall as Supreme Court judge. In 1837, a case known as Charles River Bridge versus Warren Bridge was about monopolies and charters. Two companies wanted to build bridges across the Charles River, but only one had a long standing charter. In the Marshall Court, the ruling would have been that the contract was stronger than the interests of anything else. But, under the  Jacksonians, it was ruled that the interests of the people were more important then any charter. Jackson viewed the bank as unconstitutional and undemocratic. In Document B Jackson describes the bank as incompatible with the Constitution he also says, â€Å"The present Bank of the United States†¦ enjoys an exclusive privilege of banking†¦almost a monopoly of the foreign and domestic exchange.† Therefore, when Henry Clay proposes a bill to congress in 1832 that would recharter the bank four year before needed Jackson vetoes it. After this Jackson bleeds the bank dry by removing federal deposits and started placing surplus money in â€Å"pet banks† which were pro-Jackson banks. The nullification issue emerged due to the Tariff of Abominations which protected it us from European competition. It angered South Carolina since they had to buy expensive manufactured goods and had to sell crops on an unprotected market. As a result of the high tariff Britain does not purchase as many goods as it previously did. The south also feared the tariff as a possible foothold for later federalist interference with slavery in the southern states this was brought on by a the South Carolina Cxposition written by John Calhoun which stated that the federal government has a compact with the states and that the state conventions had the power to declare laws unconstitutional and states should nullify the tariff. The tariff of 1832 was null and void they undertook the necessary military preparations and threatened to secede from the union if the United states government came to collect the customs and duties by force. Jackson was furious because he was against nullification therefore he quietly prepared an army and passed the force bill which authorized the president to use the army and navy to collect fed tariff duties. Henry Clay, although a supporter of the tariff influenced the compromise tariff of 1833 which said that the tariff would be reduced by 10% over a period of 8 years. By 1842 it would be back at 20-25%.Through Jackson’s aggressive reaction of South Carolina threatening to secede from the state we can see that Jackson believes in states rights. However, if he has to choose, the union comes before states rights. Being a guardian of the constitution means protecting many things at one time  since the constitution is basically a summary of the rights we possess. The rights that had to be protected were individual liberty, and economic opportunity among other things and the Jacksonians were not guardians of these rights. The time Jackson was president tends to be regarded as the â€Å"Age of the Common Man.† The reason as to why is that Jackson attempted to incorporate the â€Å"common man† into the current political& economic situation. The type of common man that was favored by Jackson was a poor westerner who desired land, freedom of choice, and a say in politics. He succeeds in incorporating the common man into politics through Rotation in office and involving them in government rallies. However, the problem with improving the common man was that anyone else who would fall out of this category: women, slaves, Native Americans, wealthy, Easterners, Northerners, were often den ied their own rights which is a direct violation of the constitution. (Doc D). The exempting of those who wouldn’t fit the category of the common man, helped stress universal manhood suffrage. Jackson’s personal view of the Bank of the United States was that it was unconstitutional. However, John Marshall had made it very clear in McCulloch vs. Maryland that the bank was constitutional. Jackson believed that preservation of the union preceded states rights. This was an unconstitutional view considering it was the states who had created the government. Therefore, if the government was stepping it’s rights the states could protest against the government’s actions. The first amendment is violated in Document F when the U.S. Post office suppresses abolitionist mail into the South. The reason why this was done to keep the multitude from finding out which would have motivated many to become anti-slavery. The Jacksonians could be described as two-faced considering they were for the common man while being a part of the aristocratic elite. They attempted to promote economic opportunities by eliminating the Bank of the United States. The Panic of 1937 was a repercussion of removing the bank yet Jackson succeeded in his main effort. His main focus was retrieving power from Nicholas Biddle, the owner of the bank. The belief of Union preceding states was utilized to assert the power of the executive branch. Finally, Jacksonian democracy did allow more people to vote than ever before and made government more directly responsible to the people.

Muti-racial success in schools

It is interesting to note the results of Grace Kao’s study of a multi-racial group of high school students with focused on how students from different races varied their measurement or definition of success. Individuals have set criteria, which over the years served as the standards in perceiving how one student can consider himself or herself successful. Students have classified their classmates belonging to different race and create mindsets based from physical differences like skin color and from natural origin or based from cultural characteristics. Changing or modifying student’s perception on success will not be an easy thing. The educator must consider the existing perceptions, skills, and knowledge of the students in attempt to modify their meaning of success. Every student must be encouraged to discover his or her potential and make use of it to the fullest. Academic institutions should have well rounded programs that will cater to and showcase the students’ unique abilities. In this manner, they will realize that being academically successful does not only pertain to passing a course, attaining high grades, receiving awards, or earning good jobs but more importantly, success is using potentials to their fullest and being satisfied with their performances. It must also be clear to them that an individual can be considered successful regardless of race or ethnicity. There should also be avenues for knowledge and skills sharing among multi-racial students. In this manner, they will develop appreciation of what they can offer and what others can share with them.   Healthy competition and respect for individuality must be consistently promoted. There is nothing wrong with multi-racial students setting their own standards of success, but these perceptions should not limit them from being truly successful in life. The challenge for educators is how to create a learning atmosphere that can motivate students to do away with stereotyping based from race and ethnicity and to treat one’s self as a unique individual with a set goal in his or her academics to be successful.
